When we talk about water hardness or precipitation, we are referring to the amount of ions of natural calcium and magnesium compounds that are present in it. Its level, higher or lower, depends largely on the terrain through which the source water circulates. That is why the hardness of water in cities is so different.

Would you be surprised if we told you that tap water can have 1.5 ppm of chlorine in it?

While many places add free chlorine for disinfection, others add chloramines to their water supply. Why? Because chloramines react more slowly in the disinfection process than free chlorine, and can be carried through pipes longer to remain present in tap water.

We encourage you to do your own research on this. But it is not uncommon for pools to spill make-up water that combines chlorine levels above 0.2 ppm.

pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of water. It is defined as the concentration of hydrogen ions in water.

Why is pH important?

Many chemical reactions within aquatic organisms (cellular metabolism) are necessary for survival and growth. Organisms require a narrow range of pH values.

Changes in pH can alter the concentration of other substances in the water, changing the level of toxicity. For example:

A decrease in pH can increase the amount of soluble mercury in the water.
An increase in pH can cause the conversion of non-toxic ammonia to the toxic ammonia form (unionized ammonia).

Do you know exactly what the difference is between pH and alkalinity ? Many people confuse total alkalinity and pH when talking about water chemistry. This is understandable, since the words “alkaline” and “alkalinity” seem to come from the same term, but that is not exactly the truth.

On the other hand, alkalinity and pH in water chemistry are directly related, although they are not the same thing.

Unlike pH, which is basically a scale, total alkalinity is a measure of all the alkaline substances dissolved in the water. These substances are primarily carbonates, bicarbonates, and hydroxides, along with a few others.

Total alkalinity is measured in parts per million (ppm), and the ideal range is 80-120 ppm, depending on the type of chlorine used.
