REMOVING NITRATES
Nitrates are Not a Bay Area concern, except in Agricultural area’s such as Gilroy, Salinas, Watsonville, or Sonoma. This contaminant is a Major Concern within the Central Valley of California. You Don’t want to Drink Nitrates but showering is okay.
- THE REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEM OFFERED BY CITY WATER FILTER WILL REMOVE 90% OF NITRATE. WE ALSO OFFER A WHOLE HOUSE WATER SOFTENER WHEN THE CONCENTRATION IS TOO HIGH FOR THE REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEM. THE NEW GOVERNMENT STANDARD IS 10 PARTS PER MILLION FOR DRINKING.
Most crop plants require large quantities to sustain high yields.

The formation of nitrates is an integral part of the nitrogen cycle in our environment. In moderate amounts, nitrate is a harmless constituent of food and water. Plants use nitrates from the soil to satisfy nutrient requirements and may accumulate nitrate in their leaves and stems. Nitrate and nitrite are naturally occurring inorganic ions which make up part of the nitrogen cycle. Due to its high mobility, nitrate also can leach into groundwater.

RAIS Nitrate Toxicity Report |

One in 10 people living in California’s most productive agricultural areas is at risk of exposure to harmful levels of nitrate contamination in their drinking water, according to a report released today by the University of California, Davis. “California groundwater quality is a significant concern to the Water Boards, and this comprehensive report presents current science and potential solutions on how to deal with this chronic and longstanding issue,” said State Water Board executive director Thomas Howard.
The primary concern from Nitrate exposure is interference with the body’s ability of red blood cells to carry oxygen to the tissues causing Methemoglobinemia. This is also known a “Blue Baby” syndrome. A baby with this condition will have a bluish skin color. Methemoglobinemia can be diagnosed with a blood test. This is primarily a concern for infants because babies consume large quantities of water relative to their body weight, especially if water is used to mix formulas or juices.
Households with infants, pregnant women, nursing mothers, or elderly people are most susceptible to nitrate or nitrite contamination.
When water quality standards are maintained then healthy adults and kids are not at risk. However, some individuals with exposure to antioxidant medications and chemicals may be more susceptible.
- Other symptoms of Methemoglobinemia include Headache, Fatigue, Shortness of breath, Lack of energy.
